Consequences of Broken Fellowship

Exo. 32: 1-6

The Bible teaches that God is a jealous God and he will not share his glory with another.

God has called us to himself, not to anyone or anything else not even ourselves.

God loves hard, God is a possessive God, when He enter into fellowship with us, it is a relationship forever.

Fellowship with God is not free, it costs God his Son, Jesus, and his Son gave his life to bring us into fellowship with God the Father and his Son, Jesus the Christ.

I John 1:3, “That which we have seen and heard declare we unto you, that ye also may have fellowship with us; and truly our fellowship is with the Father and with his Son Jesus Christ.”

Rom. 14:4, “For whatsoever things were written aforetime were written for our learning, that we through patience and comfort of the scriptures might have hope.”

There is a lesson for us to learn in this Exo. 32nd chapter of broken fellowship and its consequences.

Israel is God’s chosen people, whom He has delivered from the bondage of slavery.

God has saved them from the harsh and heartless treatment of Pharoah.

He has delivered through the Red Sea. He has given them the victory over Amalek.

They were thirsty and He gave them cool water from a hot rock.

They were hungry and He gave them bread from heaven in the morning and qual in the evening.

God assigned a pillow cloud the keep them cool during the heat of the day and pillar of fire to warm them at night.

Now they have come to the place God has assigned them to meet and worship Him

The 31st chapter the Lord has consecrated Israel and anointed Aaron and his son for the order of the priest.

They have promised to follow and obey God but they are not doing what they promised to do.

I.     Broken fellowship through following man and not the God who is leading the man- vs. 1-2
II.    Broken fellowship through worshipping the wrong thing- vs. 3-4
III.   Broken fellowship through worshipping in the wrong place- vs. 5-6

Even God’s people who have good intentions can get caught up in the ways of this world.

When God calls us out of darkness into the marvelous light, he expects and demand that we walk in the light.

Israel was called out of Egypt but still had Egypt in them

Some of us are called out of the world but still living in the world.

Fellowship with God is vital to our spiritual well-being as well as our physical well-being.

I.     Broken fellowship through following man and not the God who is leading the man- vs. 1-2

“And when the people saw that Moses delayed to come down out of the mount, the people gathered themselves together unto Aaron and said unto him, up, make us gods, which shall go before us; for as for this Moses, the man that brought us up out of the land of Egypt, we wot not what is become of him.”

a. Fellowship is broken when we are watching the wrong person.
  • Their eyes were on Moses, not God.
b. Fellowship is broken when we walk by sight and not by faith.
  • They failed to follow God by faith, although God has showed them miracle after miracle.
  c. Fellowship is broken when we do not accept that God
  • gives instructions to the leader not the people he is leading.
  • They knew Moses was on Mt Sinai being instructed by God to lead his people
d. Fellowship is broken when the leader does not have strong men to support and encourage the ministry.
e. Weak men give people something else to worship rather than instructing them to worship God.
  • And Aaron said take off your gold earrings, a leader taking instructions from the people his leading is a disaster waiting to happen.

II.    Broken fellowship through worshipping the wrong thing- vs. 4.

“And he received them at their hand and fashioned it with a graving tool after he had made it a molten calf and they said these be thy gods, O Israel, which brought thee up out of the land of Egypt.”

  1. God delivered them out of Egypt but Egypt still was in them.
  • They had a change of location but not a change of heart.
  • You can dress a pig and put lip stick on his lips, but as soon as he gets out, he is looking for mud hole.
  1. Aaron made a calf because that was what they worshiped in Egypt.
    1. We don’t have this problem here, but you got to be careful with this contemporary music because church people will be walking out and wobble wobble in church and called it worship!
  2. They are worshipping the wrong thing, a cow, and they knew it was not a cow that killed the first born in every house that did not have the blood on the door post.
  • They knew it was not a cow that gave them silver, gold, and jewelry as they left Egypt, God made pharaoh pay them back pay for their labor.

How could they say, “These be thy gods, O Israel which brought thee up out of the land of Egypt.”

III.   Broken fellowship through worshipping in the wrong place- vs. 5-6.

“And when Aaron saw it, he built an altar before; and made proclamation and said tomorrow is a feast to the Lord.”

  1. They are worshipping a cow on holy ground.
  • They worshipping Satan in God’s house.
  • They are at the foot of Mt. Sinai, the same place God told Moses to take off your shoes, you are standing on holy ground.
  • Mt Sinai is God’s place of worship.
  1. People will get up early in the morning for everything except to come to church for worship.

“And they rose up early on tomorrow and offered burnt offering and brought peace offering; and the people sat down to eat and to drink and rose up to play.”

  • They did religious things but no relationship with God.
  1. There are dire consequences for walking away from God.
  • God is not blind nor is he deaf
  • Broken fellowship, angered God and summons the wrath of God

I don’t understand it, they would rather serve a little g god that a BIG GOD.

They rather worship the creation rather than the Creator

The consequences of broken fellowship!

God is ready the wipe the whole nation of Israel out!

But the preacher Moses interceded of their behalf.

Moses reminded God of why He brought them out of Egypt.

Moses reminded God of his promise to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.

And reminded God of what the enemy would say!

Moses told God you stay here and I will go down and deal with them.
  • The broken tablet represents broken fellowship.
  • The breaking of the cow and grinding it represent broken fellowship as they made the  people drink it.
  • 3000 men were killed represents broken fellowship.

If you want to stay well and whole you better stay with the Lord!
