Palm Sunday’s Response to Jesus
Luke 19:35-40
Palm Sunday is God keeping his word to Israel and to the world.
Gen. 3:15, God promised to send the Savior to save sinners from sin
Gen. 12:3; 22:18, God promised to send the Savior through the lineage of Abraham, through his seed, all people shall be blessed.
God promised Israel a King, who would reign forever, Zech. 9:9, “Tell ye the daughters of Zion, behold thy King cometh unto thee meek and sitting upon a donkey and the colt the foal of a donkey."
Palm Sunday is the triumphal entry into Jerusalem of the King of kings and Lord of lord.
The responses are different, there is a crowd and within the crowd some are praises and others are not.
Some seemingly accept Jesus as the KING of Israel, indicating they want to be like Christ.
Others in the crowd reject Jesus as the KING and want him dead.
Even in the New Testament church there are some who praise Jesus and others do not.
People who are becoming like Christ, serve and praise Jesus loudly.
While others want those who praise loudly to be quiet and feel it does not take all that.
Let go back two thousand plus years and examine this Palm Sunday crowd but notice in the crowd are genuine believers who understand God’s will is to become like Christ.
Others in the crowd feel different.
The crown is fickle, faulty, and fragile.

Palm Sunday’s response to Jesus
II. The nonbeliever’s response to Palm Sunday- vs. 39-40.
Palm Sunday is the day that Jesus comes to Jerusalem and offers Himself as Israel’s Messiah.
Palm Sunday is when God himself offered salvation to the Jews and Gentiles.
Palm Sunday is the LIGHT of God shining light into the darkness.
I. The true believer’s response to Palm Sunday- vs. 35-38
a. They responded to Jesus through ministry to the Lord
“And they brought him to Jesus and they cast their garments upon the colt, and they set Jesus thereon and they spread their clothes in the way.” vs. 35-36.
- They brought the donkey to Jesus as they were told to do.
- The donkey represents peace not war.
- Cast their garment upon the colt for a comfortable ride for Jesus.
- Their love for Jesus is highlighted through their actions.
- They set Jesus upon the donkey meeting Jesus every need for the ride into Jerusalem.
- They honor Jesus through ministry they spread their clothes on the road as one would roll out the red carpet for the KING.
b. They responded to Jesus through praising and worshipping Him- vs 37-38
“And when he was come nigh even now at the descent of the mount of Olives, the whole multitude of the disciples began to rejoice and praise God with a loud voice for all the mighty works that they had seen.”
c. Palm Sunday’s response is to praise God for sending Jesus and praise Jesus for coming.
- Divine fellowship is their decision to come and fix our sin problem.
d. The response of the believers in the crowd on Palm Sunday is loud praise
- We get loud for everything else we ought to sure enough get loud for Jesus.
- Every Sunday ought to be filled with loud Praise for Jesus.
e. The whole multitude of the disciples began to rejoice.
- When they saw Him coming, they rejoiced because their help is here.
They responded through worship because of WHO HE is.
- They knew Zechariah saw him coming riding upon a donkey, “Tell the daughters of Zion, behold thy King cometh unto thee meek and sitting upon a donkey. Saying, blessed be the King that cometh in the name of the LORD: peace in heaven and glory in the highest! vs.38
They responded through ministry and worship because King Jesus is not like any other king, HE reigns forever and ever.
- King of peace and heaven’s glory is He
Well, that is the response of the true believer in the crowd, but there is another group in the crowd, the unbelievers, who responded totally different.
Listen, they saw the miracles and heard the teaching but still they did not respond like the disciples of Christ.
II. The nonbelievers’ response to Palm Sunday- vs. 39-40.
Listen, they saw the miracles and heard the teaching but still they did not respond like the disciples of Christ.
“And some of the Pharisees from among the multitude said unto him, Master, rebuke thy disciples.”
- They are praise haters and worship despisers.
- In every crowd, there are some people who are not for God or you.
- And everything you do for the Lord is criticized.
- Their response to Palm Sunday is to complain about the noise.
- It’s not that they don’t like noise, they don’t like this noise about Jesus.
- That’s the crowd in the crowd, who criticize the saints who are loud with their praise to God, who like to get up and walk out their praise, people who like to wave out their praise or just stand with lifted hand.
Illustration: shouting John.
- Jesus responds to their response of complaining.
“And he answered and said unto them, I tell you that if these should hold their peace, the stones would immediately cry out.”
- Praise belongs to God and you can’t stop praise because that is our response to his goodness, grace and mercy!
God has been too good to me, God has brought me too far, to let a rock cry out for me.
Everything I got, God gave me, where I am God brought me and where I am going God is carrying me!
Everything I got, God gave me, where I am God brought me and where I am going God is carrying me!
