God’s Great Commission for Sunday school

Matthew 28:18-20

God has commissioned his church to grow and become like Christ in this life

God knew that for this to be a reality, the commission had to be made clear and understood.

God commissioned the family in Ephesians 6:4, “And ye fathers provoke not your children to wrath but bring them up in the nurture and admonition of the Lord.”

The only way to enjoy the best life in Christ is to become like Christ.

God, being an all-knowing God, knew that families would need help and support in this lofty matter of becoming like Christ in this life.

Therefore, he commissioned his church, being the most powerful organism on the earth. The entity which He works through to accomplish his will for all the saved to become like Christ.
  1. The great commission is a teaching commission.
  2. Teaching them to obey everything God commanded.
  3. The promise of his presence to accomplish His will.

The great commission is great because it is a charge from a great God

The great commission is great because it is the desire of God’s heart.

The great commission is great because it is a great work to be done by the church of the living God

  1. The great commission is a teaching commission.

“Go ye therefore and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost."

  1. God has commissioned every believer to be a teacher in the pursuit of evangelism.
  2. Teach is the Greek word mathetueo, meaning to make disciples.
  • The first stage is to teach them how to be saved.
  • Teach through verbally sharing the gospel.
  • Teaching through our conduct and our lifestyle.
  1. Teach them that water baptism is the first act of obedience, identifying with the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus Christ
  2. Every believer is to be engaged in this aspect of teaching by leading people to the Savior of the world.

  1. Teaching them to obey everything God commanded.

“Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you and lo, I am with you always, even unto the end of the world. Amen.”

Teaching is the Greek word didasko, is to teach by mouth and has inherent in it the calculation of the increase in understanding of the student.
  1. Now, the Lord’s instructions to teach within the local church
  2. There is a commandment to teach and a commandment to obey.
  • We are to teach and be taught.
  • How long are we to teach and be taught? Until the Lord calls you home.
  1. The church is commanded to teach all of them.
  • Teach every age and at every stage of one’s life.
  • Other words you are not too young nor are you too old to be taught.
  1. Sunday school is the venue for the teaching commission from God to his church.
  • Every born-again child of God is commanded to attend Sunday school to learn more about Christ and the price He paid to purchase us.
  • Sunday school helps us to know that we have been bought with a price.
Listen, teach in verse 19 is a commandment to evangelize and fellowship in the body of Christ.

But in verse 20, teaching is growing in the word of God through the grace of God to become like Christ.

Listen, this is how God changes us into the likeness of Jesus, through teaching and being taught!

  1. The promise of his presence to accomplish His will.

“And lo, I am with you always, even unto the end of the world. Amen.”

  1. If you really want to experience God’s presence and His grace, it’s when you are teaching and being taught.
  2. There is a TEACHER teaching the teacher in Sunday school, and His name is the Holy Ghost.
  • John 14:14, “But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you,”
  1. Sunday school is God’s dressing room, where we take off the old man and put on the new man.
  • Sunday school clothes us in the righteousness of Christ.
  1. Sunday school plays a major role in making us like Christ in this life.
Sunday school is the place where discipleship takes place.

Discipleship is the process of becoming like Christ in this life.

If you are tired of being tired, come to Sunday school and get some rest.

If you are tired of struggles in life, come to Sunday school.

If you are tired of trying to make it, come to Sunday school, and you will find out you’ve already made it; you just need to live like you know you have made it.

Jesus says, “Come unto me all ye that labor and are heavy laden and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart and ye shall find rest unto your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”

Sunday school is where he lightens your load!

Sunday school is where he breaks the yoke from your neck and then says take my yoke.

Sunday school is where you find rest for your soul.

How is all that in Sunday school, Jesus says, and lo, I am with you always!
