Focusing on prayer to become more like Christ

Luke 11:1-4 & Matt. 6:9-13

For the believer's prayer is a privilege, a necessity, and a responsibility

It’s a privilege in the sense that we get to talk to God
It’s a necessity in the fact that we need prayer for spiritual growth
It’s a responsibility in that God commanded us to pray

The disciples wanted to be like Jesus and they knew that through focusing on prayer would make it happen

They focused on what happened when Jesus prayed

  • Jesus prayed over two fish and feed a multitude
  • Jesus prayed at a grave and a dead man lived again
  • Jesus spent the night in prayer and the next day he calms the raging sea, “peace be still”

They focused on prayer to become like Jesus

Therefore, Jesus says when you pray not if you pray but when

Focusing on prayer makes us like Christ

I.     Focusing on prayer leads to worshiping God that makes us like Christ - vs. Matt. 6:9
II.    Focusing on prayer leads us to discipleship that makes us like Christ - vs. 10
III.   Focusing on prayer leads us to ministry that makes us like Christ - vs. 11
IV.    Focusing on prayer leads us to fellowship that makes us like Christ  – vs. 12
V.     Focusing on prayer leads us to lean on God through worship that makes us like Christ- vs. 13

It is exciting and interesting that Jesus’ prayer starts with worshipping God and ends with worshipping God

Our theme focusing on Christ to become more like Christ is fueled through prayer

Prayer makes us more like Christ

Our vision statement, “A spiritually healthy church where Christ is seen and heard” cannot happen without prayer

Prayer unleashes God’s power through His word by His Spirit

I.     Focusing on  prayer leads  to worshipping God- vs.9
“After this manner therefore pray ye: Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name"
       a.  Worship is giving adoration to God
       b.  Prayer saturated with adoration and praise to God makes us more like Jesus
       c.  How a prayer begins displays the focus of the prayer
  • Focusing on prayer is to focus on who God is
  • Because the Greek word for prayer is pros-koo-nek-o / pros means face to face therefore prayer is being face to face with God
  • Our Father speaks of an intimate relationship with God (Abba Father) every one cannot call God Father
  • Father is the Gr. word pater means heavenly father
       d.  Which art in heaven!
  • He is over everything
  • He is above everything
       e.  Hallowed be thy name the Gr. Verb hagiazo means uncommon, set apart, none like Him
  • Holy through and through
  • Perfect holiness
Focusing on prayer evolves into worshipping the God of creation

Worshipping God in spirit and in truth makes us more like Jesus

II.    Focusing on prayer leads to discipleship - vs. 10
“Thy Kingdom come Thy will be done in earth as it is in heaven”

Contextually: thy kingdom come is Christ second coming
Application today is Jesus being our king

Thy will be done:
Roman 8:29, “For whom he did foreknow he also did predestinate to be conformed to the image of his Son that he might be the first-born among many brethren”
  • God’s will is for us to be like his Son
       a.  Discipleship is making Jesus King of your life
       b.  Discipleship is making Jesus the center of your life
       c.  The petition in the prayer is asking Jesus to come and sit on the throne in your life
       d.  Thy will be done in earth as it is in heaven
  • Well Jesus is King of kings in heaven
  • Jesus reign and rules the universe
  • God’s will is that Jesus be Lord of your life
Discipleship is becoming like Christ! And we cannot become like Christ without prayer

And discipleship will not take place until we start focusing on praying in the word of God which is where the will of God is

III.   Focusing on prayer leads to ministry - vs. 11
“Give us this day our daily bread”
       a.  Ministry is meeting needs
       b.  God’s ministry to us is providing our physical needs to do his spiritual work
       c.  This petition for daily bread is designed to:
  • Help us to trust God day by day
  • To depend totally on Him for all our needs
  • To rest in the assurance of His provision
  • Teach us to live one day at a time because tomorrow is not promised
Israel’s culture actually was to only get food for that day from the market for they had no refrigeration

Focusing on prayer leads to ministry

The more ministries we engage in the more we are like Christ

To focus on Christ is to focus on ministry for Christ

God’s ministry to us causes us to focus on ministry for Him

IV.    Focusing on prayer leads to fellowship - vs. 12,
“And forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors”

       a.  Fellowship is living in right relationships with God and people
       b.  Forgive us our debts which is our sin mends our relationship with God
       c.  We forgiving our debtors mends our relationship with people
       d.  Unforgiveness breaks our fellowship with God
       e.  Unforgiveness destroys our relationship with the person we refused to forgive
       f.  Fellowship with God only exist when we are in a loving relationship with God and man

The more we forgive others the more we are like Christ

Focusing on Christ is exercising forgiveness towards others

Our forgiveness from God is conditional, it rests upon our forgiveness of others

Lastly….

V.     Focusing on prayer leads us to lean on God through worship- vs. 13
“And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever Amen”
       a.  Focusing on Christ through prayer leads us not into temptation
       b.  Focusing on Christ through prayers leads to deliverance from Satan
       c.  Focusing on prayer leads to worship and worship leads to leaning on Jesus for everything
  • We can lean on Him for everything because He has everything
  • We can lean on Him because He is over everything
  • He is the creator and sustainer of life
       d.  The doxology of worship
  • For thine is the kingdom
  • For thine is the power
  • For thine is the glory, forever. Amen

Focusing on Christ makes life all about Christ!

Focusing on Christ through prayer makes us more like Christ

Focusing on Christ through prayer is to focus on the sovereignty of God

He is Omniscience
He is Omnipotence
He is Omnipresence
He is Immutable
