Focusing on the mission of the church

Matthew 28:18-20

The great commission is God’s direct command to his church which he purchased with his own blood

It is now called commission because Jesus mission is now the church mission

Our focus is to be on what Jesus said and what He did

He has commanded the church to continue what he started, Jesus focus is to be our focus Luke 19:10, “For the Son of man is come to seek and to save that which was lost.”

He further says in John 20:21, “as my Father hath sent me even so send I you"

The great commission is great because it comes from a great God

The great commission is great because it is to a great church

The great commission is great because it is a great work to be done

The close of Jesus earthy ministry and his ascension back to the Father is not a sad disappointing occasion but a victorious celebration of victory and the commission of his church

The mission is one of souls, it is an evangelistic mission

The purpose statement of our church is in congruent with the mission of the Lord’s church

Reaching the world with the message of Christ to change lives

The mission of soul winning is so important to God that he says it five times, five different ways in five different places

Mark 16:15, “And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature.”

Luke 24:47, “And that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in his name among all nations, beginning at Jerusalem.”

John 20:21, “Then said Jesus to them again, Peace be unto you: as my Father hath sent me, even so send I you.”

Acts 1:8, “But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.”

Matthew 28:18-20

The mandate of the mission to the church is to be our focus

18. “And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth.”

19.  “Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost:”

20.  “Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you always, even unto the end of the world. Amen.”

I.     Focusing on the authority of the mission- vs. 18

II.    Focusing on the assignment for the mission- vs. 19

III.   Focusing on the assurance of the mission- vs. 20

The mission of evangelism is the focus of God, since God is focused on evangelism so are we to be

God is concerned about souls being saved and lives being changed

The mission of the church is to be invading the kingdom of Satan and rescuing people from the gates of hell

Matthew 16:18, “I will build my church and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.”

I.     Focusing on the authority of the mission- vs. 18

“And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, all power is given unto me in heaven and in earth.”

All is the Gr. word pas which means all inclusive

Power is the Gr. word exousia means denotes executive power which encompass the ability and authority

Omnipotent power is unlimited power

       a.     A proclamation of victory for the mission

  • Jesus has defeated everything that may hinder doing this mission

  1. He defeated the grave it could not hold him

  2. He defeated death because he is alive forever more

  3. He defeated Satan at the cross because he rose early the third day morning

       b.     A proclamation of his protection for the mission

       c.     A proclamation of his provision for the mission

The authority is from God to carry out the mission…

Let us focus on the authority from God for the mission!

2ndly…

II.    Focusing on the assignment for the mission- vs. 19

Go ye therefore and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost”

       a.     The focus of the mission is to go

Go is the Gr. verb poreoumai (poor-yoo-oh-my) it is an imperative verb

  • The mission is a commandment not a suggestion

  • It is as military command

  • Also as you are going (as a way of life)

       b.     The focus on the mission is to make disciples

“Go ye therefore and teach all nations”

Teach is the Gr. word Matheteuo (ma-thay-too-o) mean to make disciples

Nations is the Gr. word ethnos means people

  • The mission is not only to get people saved but also to make disciples, followers of Christ

       c.     The mission is to baptize means to dip under

  • Baptism is to incorporate into the family of God

  • Baptism indicates fellowshipping into the body of Christ

After they are saved and baptized the mission moves to teaching

“Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you”

Teaching is the principle of discipleship

Teaching is the Gr. word didasko meaning to increase knowledge

       d.     The focus of the mission is a teaching ministry
  • Teach them to do all things I have commanded, not some

  1. Teach them to obey the word

  2. Teach them to live the word of God

  3. Teach them to be transformed by the word of God

We have looked at focusing on the authority of the mission, the assignment of the mission, now…

III.   Focusing on the assurance for the mission- vs. 20b

“And lo, I am with you always, even unto the end of the world. Amen.”

I am is ego eimi is I am that I am—I am he who is, I am he who exist, who always exist

Who is, who was, who is to come

       a.     His promise is our assurance for the mission

       b.     His presence is our assurance for the mission

       c.     His power is our assurance for the mission

       d.     His provision is our assurance for the mission

       e.     His word is our assurance for the mission

To focus on Christ is to focus on the mission of the church

To focus on Christ is to focus on evangelism

To focus on Christ is to focus on fellowship

To focus on Christ is to focus on discipleship

When I think about Jesus and his focus on me

  • He thought I was worth saving so he came and changed my life

  • He thought I was worth keeping so he cleaned me up inside

  • He thought I was to die for so you sacrificed your life so I could be free

I am glad Jesus had his mind on me when I didn’t have my mind on him
