Unshakable Focus on God’s Ministry

Acts 20:18-24

Focusing of God’s ministry can and will be fragile when God is not the priority in our lives

When we give all of our being to God, our heart, mind and soul then our focus on God’s ministry become unshakable

On the road to Damascus Paul had an encounter with the King of kings and the Lord of lords; Jesus the Christ

Paul met the God who is bigger than the whole universe, Paul repented of his sin and was saved that day and gave God his whole life

And God gave him his assignment in Acts 9:15-16, “But the Lord said unto him, go thy way: for he is a chosen vessel unto me, to bear my name before the Gentiles and kings and the children of Israel: For I will show him how great things he must suffer for my name’s sake”

Paul’s focus is unshakable and unbreakable because of God’s salvation for his life

When our focus is on God our focus on God’s ministry is unshakable and unbreakable

To be focused on Christ is to be focused on God’s ministry

As Paul addresses the Ephesian’s elders there is evidence of his unshakable focus on God’s ministry

I.     Present danger could not break his focus on God’s ministry- vs. 18-19
II.    Personal determination focusing on ministry- vs. 20-21
III.   Publicly risking his life for the ministry- vs. 22-23
IV.   Prioritizing the ministry through focusing on Christ- vs. 24

In times like these we need a savior, in times like these we need an anchor; be very sure be very sure your anchor holds and grips the solid Rock! This rock is Jesus; yes he is the one, the only one!

We need Jesus today more than ever before because we have allowed this world and the things in this world to break our focus on God’s ministry

The ministry is not mine; it is not yours; it is God’s

We are the vessels God uses for his ministry to the lost, least and left out

We can clearly see Paul’s unshakable focus on God’s ministry in this text

I.     Present danger could not break his focus on God’s ministry- vs. 18-19
       a.  Paul demonstrated a focused mindset from the start
  • How you start often determines how you finish
       b.  Serving the Lord with all humility, many tears, and trials
  • Effective ministry starts with humility
    • Phil. 2:5, “Let this mind be in you”
  • Focus on ministry will lead to some crying here and there
    • Jeremiah the weeping prophet
  • Focus on ministry will lead to trials and temptations
       c.  The enemy will try to block your ministry for God
  • Acts 23:12-13, forty men made a vow that they would not eat or drink until they had killed Paul

The present danger could not shake or break his focus on ministry for God

II.    Personal determination focusing on ministry- vs. 20-21
“And how I kept back nothing that was profitable unto”
       a.  Selfless ministry is giving it all for the glory of God
       b.  Whatever God has poured into us we are to pour into others
       c.  Paul determination was to live the message and to teach the message of the gospel
  • People would rather see a message than just  hear a message
       d.  Paul’s ministry of teaching was public from house to house
       e.  Paul ministry of teaching was inclusive
  • Testifying both to the Jews and also the Greeks
       f.  Paul was determined to share the message of salvation
  • Repentance toward God
  • Faith toward Jesus Christ
Unshakable focus on ministry for God requires determination!

III.   Publicly risking his life for the ministry- vs. 22-23
       a.  Focusing on Christ leads to doing what Christ did
  • Jesus often went into Jerusalem knowing that men were plotting to kill him
       b.  Paul heart is set on going to Jerusalem where he is not well received
       c.  Paul’s focus on ministry for God leads him to area where the 40 men has vowed to kill him
       d.  Paul’s focus on ministry superseded even his own safety
       e.  The Holy Ghost warned Paul not to go to Jerusalem
  • Agabus the prophet told Paul not to go because Jews would bind him- Acts 21:10-14
  • Paul responded not only am I ready to be bound I am ready to die at Jerusalem for name of the Lord Jesus
Unshakable and unbreakable focus on ministry for God!

Lastly…

IV.    Prioritizing the ministry through focusing on Christ- vs. 24
“But none of these things move me neither count I my life dear unto myself, so that I might finish my course with joy and the ministry which I have received of the Lord Jesus to testify the gospel of the grace of God”
       a.  Paul clearly places God’s business above his own business
  • God is clearly first in Paul’s life
       b.  Paul places God’s ministry more important than his life
       c.  None of these things could shake or break his focus on God’s ministry
  • None of these things move me: what things:
  1. The threat from the 40 Jews
  2. The danger in Jerusalem
  3. The rejections from many
  4. The possibility of dying
Paul’s priorities are:
  • To live for Christ and not for myself
  • To finish my course with joy
  • To finish my ministry with joy
  • To testify the gospel of grace
  • To do exactly what God said

Unshakable, unbreakable, unmovable focus on God’s ministry

Some 2000 year ago Jesus exhibited unshakable focus on ministry to us

While we yet sinners Jesus had his mind on us

Nothing moved Jesus from his rescue mission for souls
