Focusing on Strength from God

Isaiah 40:28-31

Sometimes in life we lose sight of God’s might when we lose our way, Israel had lost her identity, and she was not living like God’s chosen people
The first 39 chapters speaks of God’s judgment upon his people because they have chosen to worship idols rather than the God who provided all their needs
Their enemies were about to take them into captivity as the prophet continues to warn them that the Babylonian would conquer and capture Judah
Judah instead of repenting of their sin they are suggesting that their way is hid from God implying that God doesn’t know or don’t care about their troubles
Often in the journey of the people of God they tend to blame God for their troubles
We are not Israel and there is no pending army coming to take us captive but as Israel needed strength from God so do we
We are in a pandemic, with a virus that keeps reproducing itself
But we are not to focus on our troubles but to focus of God our strength
To focus on Christ is to focus on strength from God
Three thoughts from this passage to encourage us on our journey
Focusing on strength from God
I.     Focus on our source of strength- vs. 28
II.    We all need strength for the journey- vs 29-30
III.   Those who are faithful God gives strength
God has brought us halfway through 2022 by his strength and we are going to need his strength to make it through the rest of this year and years to come
I don’t know where you are on your journey or what obstacles are in your path but God did not bring us this far to leave us
The message today is not to focus on what we don’t have but focus on who have us
God has you and me in his hands and in his hand is strength for the journey
I.    Focus on our source of strength-vs.28
“Hast thou not known? Has thou not heard, that the everlasting God, the LORD, the Creator of the ends of the earth, fainteth not, neither is weary? There is no searching of his understanding”
       a.  Five reasons why we are to focus on the source of our strength
            1.  The Everlasting God
  • He is the one who always existed and always will
  • He is from everlasting to everlasting
  • He is alpha and omega
            2.  The LORD
  • He is Adonai: supreme ruler of the universe
  • He is king of Kings & Lord of lords
            3.  The Creator of the ends of the earth
  • He is creator and sustainer of everything
  • Everything was made by him and without him wasn’t anything made
            4.  He faintest not neither is weary
  • There is no quit in Him
  • He does not get tired
  • You can’t wear Him out: He is GOD
            5.  There is no searching of his understanding
  • He is Infinite
  • You can’t figure Him out
  • His ways is not our way and his thoughts are not our thoughts
     b.  God told Israel there is no one like him
     c.  There is no one to compare God to
Secondly we are to focus on strength from God

II.    We all need strength for the journey- vs. 29-30
“He giveth power to the faint and to them that have no might he increaseth strength”
   a.  All of us are weak and weary in a sense
  • There are things we need to do but can’t do it
     b.  Life at times beat us down and we feel like throwing in the towel
  • We feel like giving up
     c.  We are physically weaken by the toils of life
  • Mental weakness often shows up in our life
  • Spiritual weakness leaves us feeling hopeless and helpless
“Even the youths shall faint and be weary and the young shall utterly fall”
  • It does not matter what stages of life you are in
  • Young or old, poor or rich, black or white
The good news God will give power to keep moving
God will give strength to endure
III.   Those who are faithful God gives strength- vs. 31
“But they that wait upon the LORD shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk and not faint”
     a.  It appears that the giving of strength is conditional
  • They that wait
  • Wait is to trust in God
     b.  They that wait upon the LORD
  • To wait of God is to look for Him, to expect Him to come and see about you
  • They that trust God in and through everything
  • They that trust God no matter what things look like or feel like
  • Trust God when you can’t trace Him, when you can’t hear Him, when you can’t feel Him
     c.  Three aspects of God renewing our strength
  • They shall mount up with wings as eagles
  • They shall run and not be weary
  • They shall walk and not faint
In this promise there appears to be regression that is actually a progression.
Listen: the Lord showed me something wonderful in this text that is powerful and encouraging!
Goal of the renewed strength is not to mount up with wings as an eagle, but to walk and not faint
To walk and not faint!
To not get weary of walking with God!
  • May have to walk through heartaches and headaches
  • May have to walk through the fires of life
  • May have to walk through deep waters in life
