Effective praying produces spiritual health
Luke 18:1, Matthew 6:9-13

  1. Foundation for spiritual health is effective prayer- vs. Luke 11:1
a. Spiritual health starts with a desire to be taught
b. Spiritual health is fueled with aspirations of being   like Jesus
c. Praying is a vital part of the teaching and learning experience of a disciple of Christ
II. The principle of worship for spiritual health- vs. 9, “Our Father which art in heaven Hallowed be thy name”
a.Effective prayer always starts with adoration to God
  1. To adore God is to worship God
b. Worship is expressing love to God
  1. Our Father expresses an intimate love relationship with God
  1. Our Father is an indication of intimate fellowship with the Father
Father is the Gr. word pater in this context it means spiritual Father, heavenly father
  1. Only saved people can call Him Father
  2. Paul says Rom. 8:15 those who have received spiritual adoption cry Abba Father
  3. Jesus in garden of Gethsemane cried Abba Father; take away this cup nevertheless…
c. Worship is hallowing God’s name
“Hallowed be thy name” the Gr. word hagiazo the verb means sanctified, uncommon
  1. To be in awe and reverence of God’s name is to worship him
  2. Jesus teaches his disciples that effective prayer for spiritual health includes worship
III. The principle of discipleship for spiritual health- vs. 10, “Thy kingdom come, thy will be done in earth as it is heaven”
  1. Thy kingdom come contextually refers to the eschatological nature of this prayer
  1. But metaphorically it is referring to God reigning in our lives here on earth
  2. Jesus being King in our lives is discipleship
b. Thy will be done in earth as it is in heaven
  1. Discipleship is God’s will for every believers Eph. 1:4, “According as he hath chosen us in him before the foundation of the world that we should be holy and without blame before him in love”
  2. Rom. 8:28, “He also did predestinate to be conformed to the image of his Son…”
Prayer is a spiritual act to bring us into conformity to the nature and purpose of God
IV. The principle of ministry for spiritual health- vs.11, “Give us this day our daily bread”
  1. We are to recognized God’s ministry to us
  1. Know ye that the LORD he is God it is he that hath made us and not we ourselves we are his people and the sheep of his pasture Psalm 100:4
  2. God’s ministry to us is both spiritual and physical
V. The principle of fellowship for spiritual health- vs. 12, “And forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors.”
  1. Unforgiveness creates an unhealthy spiritual condition
  2. An unwillingness to forgive other stops God from forgiving us
  3. Fellowship can’t happen until forgiveness happen
d. Fellowship is a prerequisite for spiritual health
Vs. 13, Lead us not  into temptation but deliver us from evil for thine is the kingdom, and the power and the glory, forever Amen.
Act of worship for spiritual health
  1. For thine is the kingdom
  2. For thine is the power
