Passing on a legacy of faith
Josh 4:19-24
Dr. Edward Bland, 02/25/18

Faith while being delivered from bondage- vs. 19
“And the people came up out of Jordan on the tenth day of the first month and encamped in Gilgal in the east border of Jericho.”
People came up out of Jordan
Jordan separated Israel from the promise land
Jordan stood in the way of freedom and liberty
Our Jordan is racism which creates unjust laws, discrimination, and hatred
The road to deliverance for Israel
Death of the first born in Egypt
Crossing of the Red Sea
Battles with the Amalek
Bread from heaven
Cool water from a hot rock
The road to deliverance for black people
Packed in the bowel of slave ships like sardines
Living like animals in sheds and barns
Laboring in the heat of the day and not being paid nor being appreciated
Being the property of hateful devilish people
Raping our wives and daughter
Dehumanizing our personhood
Forbidding us to learn how to read
Taking the word of God and twisting it
But out of all of that look at us now!
Leaving a memorial of faith- vs. 20
“And those twelve stones which they took out of Jordan did Joshua pitch in Gilgal.”
Twelve stones as memorial of faith
The priest stood on the stones
The people walked through a dry Jordan
The stones were to help them to remember
Stones were left in Jordan for others who would cross
Stones with pitched in Gilgal on the other side of Jordan
What is our memorial to pass on: they are people:
Harriett Tubman, Fredrick Douglass, W. E. B. Dubois
Thurgood Marshall, Martin Luther King, Barack Hussein Obama
Passing on a legacy of faith- vs.21-23
When your children shall ask what mean these stones?- vs 21
When our children shall ask, “Who is Fredrick Douglass” “Who is Harriett Tubman” “Who is Thurgood Marshall”
Passing on a legacy of faith in God- vs. 22-23
“For the LORD your God dried up the waters of Jordan as the LORD your God did to the Red Sea which he dried up from before us…”
When our children ask what does it mean that a black man with a Muslim name “Barack Hussein Obama” could become the president of the United States of America
Faith to follow God forever- vs. 24
“That all the people of the earth might know the hand of the LORD that it is mighty that ye might fear the LORD your God forever”
Why did God let us go through what we went through
Faith to evangelism
That all the people of the earth might know the hand of the LORD
Faith to praise God
The hand of the LORD, that it is mighty
Faith to worship God
That you might fear the LORD your God forever
God brought us through what he brought us through to build our faith in Him
God brought us through to let us know we can depend on Him
