Focusing on Jesus’ joy to run the Christian race Heb. 12:1-2

How are we to experience Jesus’ joy in the Christian race?

What is it that makes God smile?

What is it that brings delight to our Lord and Savior, Jesus the Christ?

Well, what brings joy to Him should bring joy to us

The Bible says, “Heaven rejoices over one sinner that repents more than over 99 just persons which need no repentance

Souls being saved bring joy to Jesus!!

So, the solution for me and you to have joy in our Christian race is to focus on what brings joy to Jesus

How can we be showered in Jesus’ joy while we run this Christian race?

Now this race is not a competition with other believers, but a race to run like Jesus ran and to finished strong and to receive a crown from the King of kings

Three emphasis of how to experience Jesus’ joy running our race
          I.     Focus on how to run the race with joy- vs. 1
II.    Focus on Jesus the author and finisher of our faith- vs 2
III.   Focus of Jesus’ joy for the race- vs. 2b

Life is a race within itself, and how you run the race makes the difference in the race

In the secular life we have two types of runners, a sprinter and a marathon runner

Both requires conditioning and training

The Christian race is a marathon; it’s a long race from start to finish

Joyful running is better than sorrowful running

Joyful running requires focusing of Christ’s joy in the race

          I.     Focus on how to run the race with joy- vs. 1

“Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses let us lay aside every weight and the sin which doth so easily beset us and let us run with patience the race that is set before us”

    a.  Let us lay aside every weight

  • Weight is not necessarily sin
  • Weight is not necessarily something bad
  • But weight hinders our running with joy
               b.  Let us lay aside the sin which so easily entangles
  • The sin speaks of a specific sin that causes the Christian to stumble and fall
  • Sin cripples the Christian runner
  • Sin destroys the joy of running the Christian race

    c.  Let us run with patience the race that is set before us

  • Run the race with perseverance
  • Run the race with endurance
  • Run the race with a no quit attitude
  • Run the race focused on the joy of finishing strong

II.    Focus on Jesus the author and finisher of our faith-vs. 2

“Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith”

       a.  Looking unto Jesus is to focus one’s eyes, mind, and heart upon Jesus

  • Our whole being must be focused on Jesus
  • Our whole life must centered around Jesus

       b.  To run the race with joy requires intense gazing upon Jesus

       c.  We are to focus upon Jesus because he is architect of our individual race

  • Jesus designed the race
  • Jesus designed the course for our race
  • The Christian race sometimes leads to unpleasant places, through sunshine and rain, heartache and pain, through the valleys and shadows of death, even through sickness and death and the ups and downs of life

       d.  The good news is Jesus already has ran the race and made a path for us to follow

Lastly…

III.   Focus on Jesus’ joy for the race- vs. 2

“Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God”

       a.  Focus on, “Who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross”

       b.  The joy that was set before Jesus was the cross

  • Why would Jesus be joyful about dying?
  • Not just dying but the death of the cross
  • A painful, humiliating death, a criminal death

       c.  Dying for us brought joy to Jesus

  • What love, what devotion God has for us

       d.  Since dying for us brought joy to Jesus, then living for Jesus ought to bring joy to us

If you are sad and sorrowful focus on Jesus’ joy of dying on an old rugged cross

If you are sad and sorrowful focus on Jesus dying that we might live

If you are sad and sorrowful focus on Jesus becoming poor that we might be rich

If you are sad and sorrowful focus on Jesus coming all the way from heaven so we could go to Heaven

Focus on Jesus’ joy!

The Joy of the Lord is my strength!
