Surrendering our whole life to God, makes us like Christ

Rom. 12:1-2

God never tells us to do anything that we can’t do with His help

God’s will for our lives is to become like Christ, Romans 8:29, however this is a tall order, unless we are willing to surrender our whole life to God.

We cannot become like Christ and be like ourselves all at the same time, we have to give up and give in to God’s plan and purpose for our lives.

Even though God has purchased us with his own blood, I Cor. 6:19-20, “What? Know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost, which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own?"

“For ye are bought with a price: Therefore, glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God’s.”

It is logical, reasonable and biblical, that we would surrender our whole life to God, since our life belongs to God.

Well, many of us are not becoming like Christ because we are not willing to surrender our whole life to God.

Being sold-out to Christ is the prerequisite to becoming like Christ in this life.

Paul appeals to the saints in Rome to surrender and submit their whole life to Christ through sincere worship and dedicated discipleship.

God uses the great commandment and great commission to make us like Christ.

What does a surrender’s life to God look like, that makes us like Christ?

  1. Surrendering our whole life to God through worship makes us like Christ- vs. 1
  2. Surrendering our whole life to God through discipleship makes us like Christ- vs. 2
  3. Sincere worship and dedicated discipleship are evidence of being like Christ- vs. 2b

Every commandment God gives us is a challenge to grow us spiritually like His Son, Jesus.

Heaven is not God’s ultimate goal for the believer, it is transforming him or her into the image of Christ.

But we have to participate in this lofty goal of transformation, changing from the inside outward.

  1. Surrendering our whole life to God through worship makes us like Christ- vs. 1

“I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service.”

  1. Total surrendering to God is undergirded by the grace of God.
  • We need a reason to surrender, it’s human nature.
  1. Some surrender because of imminent defeat.
  2. Some surrender because of gracious gratitude
  • I surrendered to God for salvation, when I realized how he had graced me with amazing grace.
  • Anybody here been graced by grace, abundant grace, overwhelming grace.

  1. Total surrendering to God is giving Him all of us.

“Present your bodies as a living sacrifice”

  • Present is the Gr. word paristemi is to give freely.
  • Being sold out to God is to worship Him freely with no strings attached.
  • Worshipping God freely in and through the grace He has given freely.
  • To truly worship God, which makes us like Christ, requires all of us, our mind, soul, and body.
  • Total surrender to God through worship is giving God all of me!
  • Total surrender to God through worship, is a consecrated, sanctified life, which is acceptable to God.
  • A surrendered life response to God’s grace and mercy is sincere worship.
Which is your reasonable service!

  1. Surrendering our whole life to God through discipleship makes us like Christ- vs. 2a

“And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.”

  1. To become like Christ there are some do’s and don’t, you cannot follow the world and Christ at the same time.
  2. Be ye not conformed to the pattern of this world is an imperative verb.
  • We are to be transforming the world to Christlikeness rather than conforming to this world’s system.
  1. Be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind is also an imperative verb.
  • Transformed is the Gr. word metamorphoo meaning to be changed from within. A butterfly starts out as a caterpillar that undergoes complete metamorphosis and is changed.
  • Our metamorphosis comes through renewing our minds.
  1. Surrendering our whole hearts to God through discipleship to become like Christ.
  • Surrendering to Bible class
  • Surrendering to Sunday school
  • Surrendering to personal study.
God changes us through his Word empowered by the Holy Spirit and they are inseparable when it comes to making us like Christ.

You can say you are spiritual, but if there is no Word active in your life, you are just emotional.

  1. Sincere worship and dedicated discipleship are evidence of being like Christ- vs. 2b.

“That ye may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.”

  1. People who are sold-out to Christ are also devoted to worship and teaching venues.
  2. We please God and become like Christ through giving Him all of us through worship.
  • You can’t hold back on God and worship Him sincerely; you have to give Him everything that you have and everything you are.
  1. We must be surrendered and submitted to God’s will for our lives.
  2. Surrender and submission come through discipleship
  • Reading, studying, meditating, and applying God’s word to our lives, proves that we are like Christ.
That ye may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God!
