I am somebody special

Psalm 139:13-17

This is Black History Month, a time of the year where black people reflect and celebrate their heritage.

During the struggle for equal rights and to be treated as human beings, there were posters that were displayed with statements like I am somebody, I am black and proud, and I am a man.

The sign “I am a man” was carried during the 1968 Memphis sanitation worker’s strike.

As a teenager the closed fist was lifted in the air, symbolizing Black Power, with the ideal of our worth and value.

But I have discovered that our value and worth is found in God, being created by Him makes us special.

We are not special because we are black nor is those of other races either, Acts 17:26-27a, “And hath made of one blood all nations of men for to dwell on all the face of the earth, and hath determined the times before appointed and the bounds of their habitation, that they make seek the Lord…”

We are somebody special, because God made us just like he made us to become like His Son.

We are somebody special because God says we are. CNN, Fox News, ABC and CBS do not depict who you are young people.

The images are fake and false, we are not dumb we are smart, we are not law breakers, we are law abiding, we are not thugs and hoodlums, we are godly people, who love God.

Listen to what God says about who we are, that makes us somebody special.
  1. We are somebody because of our Creator- vs. 13
  2. We are somebody because God says we are special- vs. 14-15
  3. We are somebody special because we are made to be like Christ- vs. 16-17
One of the things we as parents and people of faith in general need to tell our your girls and boys they are somebody

Their worth is not found in their hair, their bodies, and the stuff of this world.

But we are somebody because we are children of the Most High God, and He says we are kings and queens.

  1. We are somebody because of our Creator- vs. 13

“For thou hast possessed my reins: thou hast covered me in my mother’s womb.”

  1. God, you have created me like you wanted me to be.
  • Possessed is its original sense, to create to make.
  1. God, you know everything about me, inside and out.
  • Reins means my inward parts, my mind, my soul, the seat of the desires, affections, and passions.
  • God has made us that the innermost recesses of our being have been constituted by God.
  1. Thou have covered me in my mother’s womb.
  • Covered is to properly weave, to knit together.
  • Thou have woven me in my mother’s womb.
  • God has put all of our parts together.
Listen, we are somebody special, this text says, God put everything that constitutes our being together, the materials and immaterial parts together before we were even born.
  • God planned our life before we were born.
  • That is why I believe if you were born with boy parts, then you are a boy and the same for a girl.
  • God is perfect and a perfect God cannot make mistakes.

  1. We are somebody because God says we are special- vs. 14-15

“I will praise thee; for I am fearfully and wonderfully made; marvelous are thy works; and that my soul knoweth right well.

  1. God made us to praise God, because of who He is and what He has done and is doing.
  2. We are special because God is special, He made us.
  3. Three things that make us special
    1. We are fearfully made that we are fitted to be respected.
    2. We are wonderfully made means properly to distinguish, to be different.
    3. Marvellous are thy works means we are to excite wonder and admiration.
My soul knoweth right well that I am fully convinced I am special, and I am deeply impressed by how God made me.

Listen, don't let anyone tell you that you are inferior to anyone because God says, you are fearfully and wonderfully made.

  1. We are somebody special because we are made to be like Christ- vs. 16-17
“Thine eyes did see my substance, yet being unperfect; and in thy book all me members were written, which in continuance were fashioned, when as yet there was none of them. How precious also are thy thoughts unto me, O God! How great is the sum of them!"
  1. God saw us while yet in our mother’s womb.
  • Mother or father could not see us.
  1. God says before we had shape and form God saw what we would be before we were.
  2. God saw you and planned your life before you are born, written in thy book, is the date you were born, and what you would do while living and the day you would die.
  • What an awesome God we serve
  • What a mighty God we serve.
  1. Precious are thy thoughts unto me O God!
  • Thoughts here are the planning and forming of our life.
  • We are special because the God of the universe had his mind on us and planned a great plan that he provided, guarded, and guided.

How precious are God’s thoughts unto us!

God planned before we were born to make you like Jesus!
